- Electronic filing tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service is
- a very easy process. The Internal Revenue Service requires a specific
- format for recieving electronically filed returns. This format is usually
- known as ELF format. To file, you must place your tax return in this
- format, and transmit it to the proper Internal Revenue Service Center.
- If you live east of the Mississippi, you will file with the Cincinnati
- Service Center. If you live west of the Mississippi, you will file with
- the Ogden Service Center. It does not matter to your local service center
- if you file with either, they get notified by the IRS in Washington as
- soon as your return is processed.
- However, there are several restrictions on transmitting to the IRS.
- First, you must have a proper address and password combination. Second,
- the IRS uses 3780 bisynchronous protocols for their systems. A normal
- asynchronous modem cannot call in on this hardware. The IRS has allowed
- for companies to provide Transmission service to both individuals and
- other firms to solve these problems. An Electronic Filing Transmitter
- has all the reqisite codes, training, and hardware to transfer ELF
- formatted returns to the IRS.
- If you have found a transmitter or intend to file directly with the
- IRS, all you have to do is to complete a Form 8453, U.S. Individual Income
- Tax Declaration for Electronic Filing, and transmit the return to the
- IRS. The 8453 is the equivalent of signing the bottom of the Form 1040.
- If you are a tax preparation firm, you will file your client's 8453
- directly with the IRS. If you are an individual, the IRS requires your
- transmitter to have the 8453 in hand prior to transmission.

- How to Electronically File using SynTax™
-
- 1. Enter you tax return into the program. If you are using one of the
- SynTax™ Converters, complete your tax return and then run the
- converter.
-
- 2. Pull down the CREATE ELF menu and select the INDIVIDUAL FILE….
- the program will check your return for diagnostic errors (actual
- tax errors, such as missmatched social security numbers) as well as
- IRS prohibitted electronic filing errors (such as forms not on the
- program).
-
- The output of this process will be a file of about 5K in size and
- a printed Form 8453. Please fill out and sign the Form 8453 making
- sure to check the "Self Prepared" button if you are an individual.
-
- If you are asking for a direct deposit of your refund directly into
- your account, be sure to enter all nine digits of your routing number
- so the IRS can find your bank. See SynTax™ Demo Manual for further
- instructions.
-
- 3. Call up AfterMath Customsoft, Inc. at 1-713-995-0537. You will be
- connected to our multiline bulletin board. You can upload the file
- here for retransmission to the IRS. If you are another firm, we can
- transmit right away. If you are an individual, we must hold the
- return until we recieve the Form 8453.
-
- You might wonder, why electronically file if you still have to send
- a piece a paper to someone? We have found that the electronically
- filed return recieves its refund on the average of 3 weeks faster than
- a U.S. Mailed return. In many cases, it will be much faster than
- that. Another advantage is knowing that your return was accepted
- or rejected by the IRS. If the IRS rejects an return, you can
- retransmit it, thus allowing you to correct your return prior to
- facing an audit or invalidated return. The IRS found that in the 1987
- tax season, errors dropped from 22% to 3% between mail filed returns
- and electronically filed returns, due to this correction mechanism.
-
- If you wish to upload your return on Compuserve please send it to
- 71230,734 using Easyplex. If you are using Genie, send it to D.PRITSKER
- Do not forget to send us your Mastercard or Visa account number and
- expiration date. (SEE BELOW)
-
- 4. Call back to AfterMath two days later and we will have the results
- from your file. this will include the date and time of the acceptance
- or any errors that you might have. If you have an accepted file,
